Opening Day at Broadway (Capitol Hill) Farmer's Market, a new birth, and we made a new friend (Bug!)!

The Broadway Farmers' Market wasn't great, but maybe because it was opening day.  And, sadly, it's too early for berries.  I want strawberries that don't have to be flown in from Mexico, damnit!

I broke down and got fresh-from-the-farm eggs.  Brown eggs have always skeeved me out, but I got a dozen mixed from Palouse Pastured Poultry, whose owner explained how the different eggs colors came to be (by mix-breeding hens and roosters).  He also assured me that the three green eggs in my basket would NOT be green on the inside and require ham on the side.  They're so pretty!

Little Praugue Bakery was there, which is the ONLY place in Seattle that makes kolaches - outside of my kitchen, of course.  They only have sweet - I prefer savory.  Lou and I shared a big slice of cream cheese strudel and moved on.

Our green-thumbed buddy from the West Seattle market, owner of Sunseed Farm, asked if we were stalking him - totally recognized us, because we buy vegetable starts and herbs from him every week.  I told him about the demise of the amethyst basil that we bought last week, so he gave us a fresh one, and we got a fennel plant and two sweet basil starts from him.

We got a bottle of (barely) alcoholic green tea from CommuniTea Kombucha.  I'd never heard of it, but it was really tasty, and I almost went back for another bottle before we left.

Other than that, we got a mixed bag of baby potatoes, and some sinfully tasty cheese from Willapa Hills Farmstead called Fresh with Ewe, a creamy sheep cheese with a bleu rind.  You people know how much I love cheese.

After a quick stop at McClendon Hardware, our local chain (there are six of them), for a plant bulb and two Walla Walla onion starts (well, there are about 30 onion starts in each container), we headed over to our favorite pub...

The Dog and Pony Alehouse, in old-town Renton, half a block from the house I got right before Lou and I got married, which ended up being far too teensie for a clothes-horse like me and a professor with 15,000 books, so we ended up where we are now, in Bryn Mawr, right on Lake Washington.

Anyway, so I got my 4 schooners of Chocolate Yeti, and Lou was all about some Scotch Ale, we shared a huge plate of fries, and start chatting up the cute guy on the other side of Lou, who was enjoying the fish n' chips.  His name is Bug.  Well, it's Chris, but he goes by Bug.  A carpenter by trade, 31, who's been working on one of the new ferries for Washington State, after they had to ground the aging short-run boats for the Port Townsend to Whidbey Island runs.

So, Bug lives down the street from the pub, so after buying us a round, we head across the street from the pub to annoy J'Nai, her husband, and two beautiful boys on Mother's Day, then head to Bug's house to check out his Pepsi machine beer dispenser.  I had my first and second PBR out of the vending machine in the house that had been his grandfather's.  Great house, lovely kitchen.  I would move into that place in a heatbeat, except that I'm saddled with the "better half" and I'm pretty sure that my grandmother's china wouldn't fit into those cabinets.  Awesome house - Bug and his cousin keep a very lovely house, and I am thrilled to meet have met them.

I hope that Bug comes over next week for barbeque.  Lou is the God of the Grill, but he accepts assistance.

Goodnight, love, peace, and all that, but most especially, major smooshies to one of my oldest friends, Jen Hunter Meyers, her beautiful daughter, Amelia (aka Patty Hearst), and the kickass man who can handle them both, Nathan Meyers, in welcoming their latest addition, Olive Mae, born this morning at 2:10 a.m., weighing in at 8 lb. 1 oz., and lovingly smooshied by everyone.

Jen, you're my hero.  I love you, Monkeygyrl.

  1. An excellent Sunday. I want a bottle dispenser to keep my next batch of homebrew in.

  2. Awesome, wasn't it? I love the fact that they had to get a coin changer because it doesn't take bills.

Oh, yeah, and I had my first (and second) PBR. How's that for rockabilly chick street cred? Not my favorite type of beer (American lager), but it wasn't bad.
