Mom and I took Uncle Billy to the craziest place in Seattle on Saturday: The Pike Place Market. I can't stop wondering, if it's tourist season, why can't we shoot them?
The first place I hit was my favorite produce shop, Sosio's Produce. Endless samples and the freshest (and friendliest) produce in the Market. I got a huge bunch of mint, some baby purple potatoes, an heirloom cherry tomato mix, 2 pounds of strawberries, blueberries, tomatillos, on the vine tomatoes, and more peppers.
At Simply the Best, who sell dried produce, I managed to score the last bag of their dried Honeycrisp apples (you guys I know how much I love honeycrisps). They had a new product, Mixed Vegetable Chips, which had dried squash, zucchini, carrots, taro root, green beans, sweet potatoes, and a bit of sea salt. Awesome. I bought two bags, and Mom bought another. They snacked on it, but I'm saving mine for a soup (or something).
I walked through Market Spice, but see anything that I couldn't get somewhere else for less. Same with Sur la Table. At DeLaurenti's (gourmet deli), however, I picked up two more bottles of Fee Brothers bitters, cranberry and grapefruit. I also got the guys at the deli downstairs to give me two 12-ounce containers of brine from two different olive mixes for free. He picked one that was low on the salt factor, and one from Morocco. I use them for my martinis.
I explored the lower levels, but didn't find anything interesting. My favorite antique shop is gone.
